One of the things that I feel sets LoveCakes apart from other cupcake makers in town is my willingness to totally personalize the cupcakes for the client’s event. From personalized monogrammed toppers at a wedding to color-coordinated fondant decorations, I will do my best to make their vision come to life. Sometimes it’s just as simple as tinting the frosting to match their party favors. Regardless, they feel like I went that extra mile that some other bakeries just don’t bother with.
You can do this yourself with one of my favorite tricks. I’m not incredibly skilled with the piping bag (I’m always shaky despite my very low coffee intake), so I rarely pipe decorations with frosting or royal icing. But what I can do is make paper toppers. I print up 1-inch circles with a special message and cut them out with handy paper punches. Then I cut out a slightly larger circle in a coordinating paper, adhere them to each other with a small piece of double-stick foam core and insert a toothpick.

Voila! Instantly decorated cupcakes. If you don’t want to invest in a variety of paper punches, you can also buy pre-cut paper shapes at a craft store and follow the same steps.
Fondant is another fun item to have in your decorating arsenal. It comes in many colors and some are even flavored. I like to cut out the letters for “Happy Birthday” and the recipients’ name and place one letter on each cupcake, then set them out in a row on a table. It makes a very lovely display. Or make cute sleeping baby faces!

Make sure to store your fondant as airtight as possible to prevent it from drying out. I wrap mine in plastic film, seal it in a zipper bag and them store it in its original container, which usually has a tight-sealing lid. Fondant is not cheap, so it’s a good idea to follow these steps so you don’t waste it, which I’ve done unfortunately.
